Needham Physician Receives Preceptor Hall of Fame Award
Award recognizes exemplary service to Family Medicine education
(Boston, MA) March 6, 2017 – Frederic Baker, MD, president of the Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians (MassAFP) has announced that Leonard M. Finn, MD is the recipient of the 2017 Preceptor Hall of Fame award in recognition of his exemplary, life-long clinical teaching of medical students in the specialty of Family Medicine.
The MassAFP presents the Preceptor Hall of Fame award to recognize a physician who exemplifies the tradition of a Family Physician’s long-time dedication as a teacher, mentor and preceptor. The 2017 award will be presented at MassAFP’s Annual Meeting at noon on March 24, 2017 at the Taj Hotel, Boston.
Dr. Finn has been a Family Physician for nearly 40 years and is the founder of Needham Wellesley Family Medicine PC, in Wellesley Hills, MA. He is strongly committed to his patients, his community and to giving medical students the opportunity to visit his office for family medicine clerkships. Dr. Finn is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Family Medicine & Community Health, University of Massachusetts Medical School, and Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Public Health and Family Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine and a Clinical Instructor, Boston University School of Medicine.
Medical student, Kimberly Dao, TUSM-MMC class of 2018 states, “Dr. Finn inspires confidence, but with the grace of someone who earned it. He’s inspirational and shows that it is possible to be a lifelong family physician and student.” Kimberly adds, “Dr. Finn is consistently seeking out opportunities to further his education, whether it be through additional training or conferences ... he wears the hats of being a teacher and a student himself.”
Dr. Finn is also highly regarded by his colleagues, as Wayne Altman, MD, FAAFP, Vice Chair Family Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine shares, “He has been a Family Medicine educator for several decades in Massachusetts. He is a true icon of Family Medicine in our state. He continues to host medical students at all levels from Tufts and is extremely well regarded by the students. He is a generous teacher who has offered wisdom and mentorship to countless students.”
According to Dr. Finn, "The lifelong friendships that I have formed with some students are one of the great benefits of precepting. Just having the opportunity to work with these excellent medical students during family medicine clerkships is a marvelous opportunity to get to know very smart, very talented, very committed people with excellent values. The students have a great deal to teach me which I value enormously. And as we all know, the process of precepting family medicine medical students and the research required to support it, teaches us a great deal."
