The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) voted to include LAIV among the recommended influenza vaccines providers may choose to administer for the 2018-2019 season.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued preliminary guidance for the 2018-19 season recommending that inactivated influenza vaccines (IIV) should be the primary choice for all children, but LAIV, when available, can be offered to children who would not otherwise receive an influenza vaccine.

MDPH is planning to have limited quantities of LAIV available for pediatric providers. MDPH prioritized school located clinics and health departments to receive LAIV. Pediatric providers are also able to get limited quantities of LAIV, but need to opt-in to receive these doses. These doses are above and beyond the original flu 2018-2019 prebook for that site.

Sites have been asked to discuss decisions regarding which flu products to order with their Medical Director. If you have any questions about flu vaccine ordering, please contact the MDPH Vaccine Unit at 617-983-6828.
